What is Buchu?

Buchu is a Fynbos shrub that is indigenous to South Africa and has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine. The medicinal leaves of the Buchu plant can be used as an antiseptic on open wounds and blisters, as well as a potent, natural anti-inflammatory to help alleviate swollen and painful joints.

Reports cataloging the medicinal use of Buchu have been recorded as far back as the early nineteenth century, with Dr. George G. Sigmond’s article first documenting the plant’s powerful healing properties appearing in Volume 30, Issue 784 (8 September 1838) of the Lancet- a leading, international medical journal. Since then numerous medical journals have published articles citing the powerful effects of this little plant, including the American Eclectic Materia Medica and Therapeutics, 1898; the Scottish Medical Journal, 1998 and the Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, 2002; to name but a few.
